AUDIO - WHY GOULD GOT SACKED: Listen to the MMM interview

Channel Nine has stood down outspoken rugby league commentator Phil Gould from the Footy Show after his fiery ambush of NRL boss David Gallop last night on Triple M radio.

It's understood Nine boss David Gyngell phoned Gould just hours after the confrontation to let him know he'd been stood down.

“We advertised that Phil Gould was going to be on the show but that is not happening now,” The Footy Show boss Gary Burns told News Ltd.

“I don’t know the reason why he is not on. David Gyngell has just told me that he is not on.

“I am sure David Gallop was not happy with the Triple M interview and this has happened after that.”

29/07/2008 5:56:58 AM Thank god!!!!!! This is the best news rugby league supporters could ever get, makes up for all the bad news lately. Just make sure he gets the same lifetime ban that sonny bill should. Posted by: Tobias Funke, parramatta, Australia Reply

29/07/2008 6:39:29 AM the footy show is ridiculous, a couple of weeks ago they set bill harrigan up in their 'star chamber' where fatty, matty and freddy absolutely giving it to him re: bad video ref decisions. although i agree with what they were arguing it was a blatant ambush!! now they were going to do it to david gallop. if they wanted a sensible view on issues, they should balance the arguments instead of making it seem one sided. its a perfect example of idiots thinking with their hearts instead of their heads Posted by: nick c, belrose, Australia Reply

29/07/2008 6:44:02 AM All league fans should actually listen to what Phil Gould is saying. League is dying in Sydney and the CEO of the NRL has no plan for the future. Silencing of critics was synonomous with Communist Russia or Nazi Germany;if Nine and the NRL won't face up to some honest appraisal from Gus then the game is truly in strife. 29/07/2008 7:04:13 AM This is disapointing,Phil Gould is just speaking the truth about the game and how David Gallop does not have a future plan for the game. All they do is just sweep it under the carpet and forget about the problems while Phil Gould is about the only one speaking the truth and look what happens to him.

29/07/2008 7:31:48 AM Onya Gus...I was saying to a mate in NZ this morning that the national feeling towards SBW is not as bad as the media have made out, probably because anyone in the RL administration or C9 would gag themselves for risk of retribution. Good to see Gus has not obliged but unfortunate to see nine stand him down. Admitedly he could have made his point without so much fire but Gallops Kevin Rudd style BS would have pissed me off too. Keep talking Gus, im a Rugby boy but league needs blokes like you. Posted by: Wall'by Deans, Pyrmont, Australia Reply
