VIDEO - Manly, Melbourne: Who do you hate most?
AUDIO - Tommy Raudonikis slams the 'whingeing' Storm
It must be a relatively quiet lead up to Sunday’s grand final between Melbourne and Manly, with the back page stories today centring on the so-called hatred of both teams from fans.
Tommy Raudonikis – who dead-set hated Manly in the 1970s when he played for Western Suburbs in the heat of the Fibros versus Silvertails clashes – has come out and said he hates Melbourne even more because they are a bunch of whingers, so he’ll be cheering for the Sea Eagles.
Now I heard from plenty of Parramatta fans on my radio sports show last Sunday. Most of whom said they can’t stand Manly and will be cheering for Melbourne.
Look, I know we don’t like talking about hating anyone, but it has at least created an interest, and for two teams not loved outside their own supporter base, at least everyone seems to have adopted a team for the grand final.
The two combatants will get together at a much happier venue this afternoon, Luna Park in Sydney for a fan day, so maybe there can be some love in the air rather than all of this talk of hatred.
Sure to create the old water-cooler debate today is the Men of League, that sensational charity organisation, has named each club’s greatest ever player.
How on earth, for example, can you possibly decide the best St George player, or South Sydney with all of the legends they and other clubs have?
Well, John Raper has been named the Dragons’ greatest ever; Clive Churchill, the little master, is the South Sydney greatest of all time; while fellow immortal Bob Fulton has that mantle at the Manly club.
Here’s the others: Keith Barnes, Golden Boots, has won that honour at Balmain; Darren Lockyer at Brisbane; Mal Menninga at Canberra; Scott Prince at Gold Coast; Steve Mortimer at Canterbury; Steve Rogers at Cronulla; Rod Wishart Illawarra;Cameron Smith at Melbourne; Andrew Johns the obvious choice at Newcastle; Frank Bumper Farrell at Newtown; Stacey Jones with the Warriors; Jonathon Thurston at the Cowboys; Ken Irvine at North Sydney; Mick Cronin at Parramatta, Greg Brandy Alexander at Penrith; Dally Messenger at the Roosters; and my mate Tom Raudonikis at Western Suburbs.
Some great names. As I say, sure to be debated, because how many great, great players have missed out? Immortals Reg Gasnier and Graeme Langlands to name just two!
How on earth, for example, can you possibly decide the best St George player, or South Sydney with all of the legends they and other clubs have
