He's played ten Tests for Australia. He's been named in a South Sydney Dream Team spanning nearly 100 years. But despite his enormous achievements, raw talent and explosive power - Bob McCarthy will always be remembered for... 'that' intercept try.

It was just before halftime in the 1967 decider between the Bunnies and Canterbury when McCarthy intercepted a pass out wide from hooker Cliff Brown... we won't ruin it for you - watch the video and see for yourself.

Barrel-chested but athletic, McCarthy's early coach Clive Churchill gave him license to stand wide in attack to make best use of his tank-like charges.

It worked a treat, and the powerhouse back-rower never looked back.

But for all his talent, the great man was as tough as nails.

It was primarily McCarthy's retribution which saw Manly's John Bucknell leave the field before half-time in the 1970 Grand Final after Bucknell had earlier broken the jaw of Souths captain John Sattler and the Souths forwards had regrouped to protect and avenge their skipper.
