Storm boss blasts 'disgraceful' Sydney crowd

Melbourne Storm chief executive Brian Waldron has launched an attack on the people of Sydney after suspended captain Cameron Smith was booed by fans at yesterday’s NRL grand final.

Smith – was banned for two weeks for a grapple tackle, ruling him out of Melbourne’s 40-0 loss to Manly yesterday – was subjected to boos from the crowd when his face was shown on ANZ Stadium’s big screen.

Waldron, who along with coach Craig Bellamy is facing legal action over comments made against the NRL judiciary after Smith was suspended, described the crowd’s actions as “a disgrace”.

“When Cameron Smith’s face came up on the screen last night, 80,000 people… 60,000 people booed him,” Waldron told SEN radio.

“I think if any insults are to be thrown, they should be thrown they should be thrown at the people of Sydney, because that was an absolute disgrace.

“To do that do a player that’s the Australian captain, whether it’s in jest, whether they’re full of drink, I don’t know what it is.

“I was disgusted in the crowd last night to do that to the Australian captain and they need to be told – I think (NRL boss) David Gallop should come out and make a statement about what a disgrace it is to treat the Australian captain like that.”

Gallop has appeared on Ray Hadley’s 2GB morning program today, but did not take Waldron up on his suggestion to berate yesterday’s grand final crowd, saying he cannot control 80,000 people.

6/10/2008 2:32:56 AM Whinger Waldron at it again, can't take defeat like a man, has to resort to childish name calling, the sooner he gets his ass sued the sooner he will shut up...... Posted by: william smith, SYDNEY, Australia Reply

6/10/2008 3:02:23 AM Is Waldron in his own world? He now wants the fans to say sorry for booing Cam Smith?. I mean he is a complete disgrace to his own club, I think Melbourne should replace him with someone who has some concept of fan favourites, I mean im sure Melbourne fans boo any other team when they play but do Melbourne think they are so HIGH & MIGHTY to play in the NRL is a privledge not a right, so i would like to see if Melbourne could Start there own comp and survive. 6/10/2008 3:50:33 AM I come from NSW i actually think the people that are making these comments about Cameron Smith want to have a look at their teams i think quite a few players have been let of the hook by Referees
And on the subject of the Melbourne CEO and Craig Bellamy why cant they have a say about the judiciary
It just shows you how weak the judiciary is if they cant take opinions from the coaches and administrators of all the teams the judiciary are not perfect

6/10/2008 4:29:44 AM Brian Waldron is clearly a bitter man. I would like to blame it on either disappointment at being so comprenesively beaten or maybe just a tinge of bad sportsmanship, but this fellow has been at it for too long. It is unfortunate that Cameron Smith was booed by a large section of the crowd, but it was normal behaviour exacerbated by the astonishingly remarkable over-reaction by Melbourne, and Walrdon in particular. He needs to have a long hard look in the hall of mirrors and grow up. Posted by: Ray Mason, Sydney, Australia Reply
