AUDIO - Greg Bird: 'I love my girlfriend'

Sharks player Greg Bird has lost a bid to have his bail conditions varied so he can see his girlfriend - but a Sydney court has been told an assault charge against him will be downgraded.

Greg Bird made the application to have his bail conditions and AVO varied so he can contact his alleged victim and girlfriend Katie Milligan.

Bird's lawyer, Leslie Nicholls, presented a letter to the court from Ms Milligan supporting changes to the AVO and saying she has no objection to Mr Bird contacting her.

"She has no objection to Mr Bird contacting her and this is a significant change in circumstances," Mr Nicholls said.

"The wishes of such a person should be given significance."

The Cronulla player is accused of glassing her in the face earlier this year, and was charged with maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm.

Downing centre court was today told that charge is likely to be dropped and replaced with the lesser charge of reckless wounding.

Despite the email from Ms Milligan supporting Bird's request to see her - the application has been rejected.

The court was told there is an important public policy in allowing police to protect victims that do not want an AVO.

9/10/2008 5:46:10 PM Weak is all I can say what about trying to blame the friend is not lying to police a crime. All this portrays is that is ok to do anything you like as long as the other person doesn't press charges which is the case in most domestic violence which unfortunate sometimes ends in death because it is not nipped in the bud. We all knew he would get off deep down the legal system is a farce..... Posted by: Scott Harrison, Townsville, Australia Reply

10/10/2008 10:45:47 AM My partner is a former victim of domestic violence (her first relationship) and her father lived in the same house and ignored it. He is as pitiful as her first partner. There is no excuse and Greg Bird has no excuse (and why she would want to defend him) well hey money talks. He is young - can pay her to keep quiet - they go they're separate ways he keeps earning a living. Except the cops know the facts, they just need the witness - and she has been paid off. look out next girlfriend of G. Bird Posted by: Browser , Australia, Australia Reply
