South Sydney fans united to support their team's 'Return to Redfern' on Sunday, but legends of the club were split on the future of the mighty Rabbitohs. As the financial crisis continues to suffocate Sydney clubs, the NRL's $8 million relocation offer is looking increasingly tempting - despite the assurances of Russell Crowe and Peter Holmes-a-Court in 2006 that the Rabbitohs will never abandon their grassroots in Redfern. But club great Ron Coote believes the move up the F3 is a financial "no-brainer"."I think that's where their home is," Coote told News Ltd. "Souths fans are everywhere. They're not just in the Redfern area. Commercially, they would be much better off to be at a ground that can hold nearly 50,000 people. There's all the corporate support they can attract. Singo (John Singleton) wants to look after them. To me it's a no-brainer."John Sattler, on the other hand, pushed for a multi-million dollar upgrade to the Redfern facility to allow NRL matches to be played in the Bunnies' heartland, though this option is shaping as a near-impossibility.In 2007 the Rabbitohs committed themselves to a long-term contract with ANZ Stadium, and club officials insist relocation has not been considered as a genuine option.
To me it's a no-brainer... Ron Coote
9/02/2009 2:01:56 AM Wake up Ron Coote the only reason you want souths to move is to help your buddies out at EASTs. Easts have no juniors and should move NOT the rabbitohs. Posted by: Tony b, illawong, Australia Reply
9/02/2009 2:22:05 AM Ron Ron Ron....if there are 2 clubs who should move out of the Sydney it is the Roosters and Sharks. What is embarassing was the low crowd turn out for the semis last year. This should tell you about the "bankrupt" claim for the Roosters to stay where they are !! Pulling out of junior teams, always poaching other sides players in their, low crowds/dodgy crowd numbers (ie ask the Pernith CEO) all because a rich man (good luck to him) and the SCG Trust...need to look forward RON....to the future! 9/02/2009 8:34:27 AM Well Harry; isn't that like calling the kettle black. Tell us all about the huge crowds at the Bunnies games last season NOT; forget being loyal to their team, they, like most fans, rock up when their team is winning, run for the hills when they are losing. As for Easts poaching players, seems not so long ago Bunny management used to stand at The Roosters day waiting for their cast offs, get real, its the name of the game, remember, it is only a game. 9/02/2009 10:07:39 PM Trish, more comments from the uniformed. Here is an article published on this site as well as the souths site which shows despite out poor showing we still were ranked 3rd for crowds last year. Where was the RORTERS you support. http://www.rabbitohs.com.au/News/Club-News/Shane-Richardsons-Open-Letter-to-Members.html Now get to Gosford Posted by: tony b, illawong, Australia Reply
11/02/2009 3:36:51 AM All this talk of teams moving to the Central Coast, by the time a team has moved up here Central Coast could of theoretically built it's own team for entry into the 2011 competition entering the comp while teams like Roosters & Souths are umming and arrring wondering why they are bankrupt and leaving the comp giving a truely owned Central Coast team a pick at a number of players. Any team moving to the coast would get great support. A truely new central coast team would get massive support! Posted by: Bob Allen, Shelly Beach, Australia Reply
